Ribbonfly is the colloquial name of a species of non-sapient herbivores common in the Northern regions of Ninth-World.

Appearance[]

In appearance, ribbonflies resemble a thin, translucent sheet of material and may not even appear to be alive at first glance. In fact, they are a type of very basic animal consisting mainly of a very basic central nervous system and a stomach. There are two known varieties of ribbonflies.

Ribbonfly Types[]

Vibrant ribbonflies are brightly coloured, and comprise at least four distinct species. The two most common hues are red and yellow, though rare blues, violets, and combinations of multiple hues have been documented. Similar to earth, this colouring serves as a warning that the animals release a potent toxin when consumed, capable of killing a Kreya and of crippling a human or Golgar. They reach from six to twelve inches in length and average a sixth of an inch in thickness, and may be found in most north-western ranges of ninth-world.

Common ribbonflies are non-venemous, and this much duller in hue, ranging from shades of green to brown. This is also for reasons of camouflage, as it is not uncommon for common ribbonflies to be mistaken for leaves. Sizes range from four to eight inches in length.

Behaviour[]

Though they are capable of some locomotion on their own, ribbonflies generally let the wind carry them. The flat body of a ribbonfly is angled to catch the wind, similar to a sail. When a ribbonfly is blown onto edible plant matter, it will anchor itself, and spend up to 24 hours consuming it.

Several species of ribbonfly will also use this anchoring ability to attach themselves to each other and to travel in flocks of extremely variable size.

It is uncertain how ribbonflies reproduce, though larval stages have been documented.
